Inspired Comforts Toolkit
For posterior-approach hip replacement. The three precautions usually apply for 6 weeks. Print, post on the fridge or nightstand. Surgeon-specific instructions override these defaults.
The 3 rules
Rule 1
No bending past 90°. Don’t bend at the hip past a right angle. No leaning forward off a low chair. No reaching to your foot.
Rule 2
No crossing your legs. Don’t cross the operative leg over the midline. Don’t twist toward the operative side.
Rule 3
No internal rotation. No toes turning inward. Keep them pointing forward. Even seated.
How to apply each rule daily
- Use the raised toilet seat
- Sit on chairs with arms (not low chairs / sofas)
- Use the long-handled reacher to dress
- Use the sock aid
- Sleep on your back with a pillow between knees
- Sit-and-stand from the unoperated side
- When in the car, slide in seated, then swing legs in together
Anterior-approach surgery
- Anterior-approach hip replacements have different precautions
- Confirm with your surgeon — these may not all apply
