Tracking drain output (JP, Hemovac, or similar) tells you and your surgical team when drains are ready to come out. Empty per your surgeon’s schedule. Record the volume, color, and anything unusual. Bring this to your post-op appointment.

- Sudden increase in drainage (more than yesterday’s total in one emptying)
- Bright red, fresh blood after the first 24-48 hours
- Foul-smelling drainage
- Cloudy, milky, or unusual color
- Fever above 100.4°F
- Skin around the drain site is red, warm, or oozing
- The drain falls out or breaks
