Wedding guest with drains, a port, or a wig — how I went and didn’t hide

The simple answer

Going to weddings during active treatment is doable with planning. Time the event for cycle days 10-14 (energy peak), bring your own pillow for chairs, dress around the medical device (drain pouch under wrap dress, port-access top under blazer, wig or scarf as preferred), plan a graceful early exit, and accept the visibility you choose.

Pre-event

  • Time event for energy peak in your cycle.
  • Hydrate aggressively day-before.
  • Lay out outfit; pack drain pouch / port-access top.
  • Confirm transportation; arrange driver.
  • Tell the host privately you may leave early.

The outfit

Drape-front blouses, wrap dresses, button-front blazers — all let you dress around drains, ports, and visible scars. Long sleeves hide PICC lines if needed. Soft fabrics for chemo skin sensitivity. Block heels or dressy flats — not stilettos.

On the day

  • Pillow for the chair (lumbar).
  • Water bottle for hydration.
  • Bathroom location confirmed (pre-event).
  • Avoid alcohol; one toast is enough.
  • Don’t dance more than 1-2 songs if energy low.
  • Plan exit; gracious ‘I have to head out’ is normal.

FAQ

Should I tell other guests?
Optional. Your call.
Will I look ‘sick’?
Most patients don’t. Wig, scarf, well-chosen outfit minimize visibility.
