The first big group event after a mastectomy — a script

The simple answer

The first big group event post-mastectomy combines physical recovery with body-image processing and the conversational unpredictability of seeing many people at once. The script that works: arrive late if energy is limited, wear the outfit that makes you feel most yourself, prepare 2-3 brief responses to ‘how are you’ and ‘how was treatment’, identify a safe person at the event, plan an early exit, and accept that some interactions will land and some won’t.

The pre-event prep

  • Plan outfit 2 weeks before; try it on.
  • Identify your ‘safe person’ (close friend who knows the situation).
  • Practice your 1-sentence response.
  • Plan exit time.

The script

‘I’m doing well. The recovery has been long. I’m just enjoying being here.’ That’s enough. You don’t owe details.

If pressed: ‘I appreciate that you care. I’m not up for talking about it tonight, but maybe another time.’

What to skip

  • Trying to be ‘normal’.
  • Drinking heavily.
  • Detailed medical updates to acquaintances.
  • Staying past your energy.
