Mother Inspires Daughter to Donate Kidney

The bond between a mother and daughter is a timeless and profound connection, forged through shared experiences, unconditional love, and unwavering support. It is a relationship that transcends words, where understanding, empathy, and affection create an unbreakable bond that withstands the tests of time.

When Sarah Anderson was a child, she noticed an 18-inch scar wrapping around her mother Laura’s back and side. Little did she know, Laura had donated a kidney in 1993 to a cousin suffering from polycystic kidney disease (PKD). In January 2018, inspired by her mother’s act of kindness, Sarah donated her kidney to the nephew of Laura’s recipient, who was also battling PKD. Both surgeries, 24 years apart, took place at Cleveland Clinic.

Sarah registered as a kidney donor through the Cleveland Clinic Kidney Donor website, and after discovering she was a match, she underwent extensive testing and counseling. She made the decision to donate, believing that it was the right thing to do.

Laura, too, had donated her kidney without much hesitation. She believed it would work out, and indeed it did. Her cousin, Mary, has been living with her kidney for over two decades, and their bond grew stronger after the transplant.

Sarah’s surgery, a laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, was less invasive than her mother’s procedure thanks to advancements in kidney removal. Dr. Alvin Wee, the surgical director of the Renal Transplantation Program at Cleveland Clinic, led the surgical team. Dan, the recipient of Sarah’s kidney, is on the path to recovery after some initial complications.

Both mother and daughter encourage others to consider becoming kidney donors, knowing the profound impact it can have on someone’s life.

Their journey of love, sacrifice, and hope echoed far beyond the confines of their own lives, inspiring others to embrace the power of generosity and the boundless potential of the human spirit.

Standing side by side, hand in hand, Laura and Sarah understand that their narrative serves as more than just inspiration—it’s a beacon of compassion illuminating the path for others. Theirs is a tale of shared humanity, reminding us all of our capacity to make a difference, one act of kindness at a time..
