The simple answer

Holiday gatherings on dialysis combine fluid restrictions, food restrictions, energy management, and family conversations about your health. The plan: schedule treatment to avoid the holiday day, pre-eat a renal-friendly meal, sit near the bathroom and a chair you can leave easily, prepare 2-3 deflections for medical-update questions, and pace your alcohol/water carefully.

Schedule

Most dialysis centers will work with you to schedule treatment to avoid the holiday. Ask early — slots fill.

The food

  • Pre-eat a renal-friendly meal.
  • At the gathering: small portions of safer items.
  • Skip: high-K (bananas, oranges), high-P (cheese, dark chocolate), high-sodium (cured meats).
  • Bring your own dish if needed.

The conversations

‘I’m doing well. The dialysis works for me. Thanks for asking.’ That’s enough. Don’t owe details to extended family.
