Atlanta hosts dozens of cancer, kidney, mastectomy, and chronic-illness awareness walks annually. Major events: Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, National Kidney Foundation Kidney Walk, Light the Night, Stupid Cancer events. Most happen in spring (April-June) and fall (September-November). Below: how to participate.

The wardrobe for awareness walks

Comfortable layers; team t-shirt provided usually. Sun protection (most walks are outdoor). Hydration. Slip-on shoes if you’re at risk of foot-cast issues. Many walks have rest stops; pace accordingly.
